It’s that time of the year when our calendars are packed with numerous desi festivities and occasions, and if you are anything like me, it’s also the time of the year when you just want to kill yourself for not having enough Indian clothes in your closet. It’s frustrating because I really do feel my prettiest in them, so I don’t know why I don’t invest in more ethnic wear throughout the year instead of buying in bulk and burning a huge hole in my pocket at one go. Anyway, if you are also one of those people who are going frantic thinking about what to buy and wear during the upcoming Karwa Chauth, Diwali, and shaadi functions, I’ve got some ideas for you!

The first thing you want to do is pick up a bunch of pretty kurtas. We are at a beautiful time in Indian fashion when just about any style of bottoms paired with a kurta is right on trend, so you can play around with a ton of different combinations without having to repeat the same styles. Here are some tips on how you can mix and match your kurtas in refreshing ways and set yourself apart from the sea of women wearing the basic anarkalis, salwar/patiala suits, and blingy sarees at these events.

1. Kurta With Dhoti Pants

You just can’t go wrong with dhoti pants; pair them up with anything and you are guaranteed to look ultra chic. You can team them up with kurtas of all lengths—from short peplum kurtas to floor-length anarkalis and even with high-low and asymmetrical styles. The best part is that you can reuse them unlike that sari or anarkali suit that sits abandoned in your closet after being worn once. Just pair it with your favorite casual crop top/button-down and juttis for a comfy and cool look during the warmer months.

2. Kurta With Ethnic Maxi Skirts

I have been obsessed with this winning combo ever since I saw Kareena Kapoor in Payal Khandwala last year. You can wear the lehenga with an anarkali, but I personally prefer the juxtaposition a long, straight fit kurta creates when paired with a voluminous skirt.

3. Kurta With Churidars

I know what you’re thinking: Kurtas with churidar—groundbreaking!! However, we are no longer living in a time when churidars only came with with knee/floor grazing anarkalis. Long, straight kurtas paired with churidars are back in fashion as are short 60s style straight figure-hugging silhouettes. I have also been seeing a lot of asymmetrical, drape, and cape-layered kurtas that make for a welcome change. Just experiment with different shapes, fit, and lengths and it will keep your look from getting repetitive.

4. Kurta With Jackets & Waistcoats

Many suits come with built-in jackets or as a 3-piece set, but if you want to save money, I recommend buying one separately. They are a great way to jazz up old suits, plus they are so versatile that you can even wear them over western wear for a fusion feel. Waistcoats can be layered over anything from salwar/patiala/anarkali suits to lehengas, mid-length jackets gel well with dhoti pants, whereas long kurta jackets when worn with cigarette pants give off a very contemporary vibe.

5. Kurta With Palazzo Pants

What I love most about palazzo pants is that their ponchas come in various widths and lengths, so you can dress them up or play them down depending on the occasion. The really wide leg ones can be worn with long kurtas (my favorites are the ones with sheer fabrics and front-open slits) at formal events, whereas palazzos with a narrower hemline like Biba above are perfect for pujas or office parties where you want to look ethnic but not too overdressed.

6. Kurta With Cropped Trousers

This trend is definitely not for those who like to play it safe, but if you like to have fun with fashion this is one outfit that is bound to make a statement. While tall women can experiment with different proportions, shorter women should stick to 3/4th and ankle length pants and pair them with heels as they create the illusion of longer legs. Anything shorter will have an adverse effect as it can visually chop the legs in half making you look even stumpier.
